What to Expect from Your First Chiropractic Adjustment

Your first chiropractic adjustment can be enlightening, in that you might not realize how badly your back had been hurting until the adjustment vanquishes your symptoms. After an adjustment, you should feel an immediate release of tension. You’ll feel relaxed and at ease, with a feeling of overall wellness.

Health History

Your first visit to a chiropractic center begins with a review of your medical history. Just like any other healthcare provider, the doctor of chiropractic will ask you about prior diagnoses, medications, surgeries, and imaging studies. If your symptoms are associated with a particular injury, you’ll be asked to describe what happened. Be as specific as possible when describing your symptoms.

Evaluation

Your chiropractor will do a thorough evaluation to make sure a chiropractic adjustment is appropriate for you. Some patients are asked to have X-rays. The chiropractor will do a physical exam, including manual palpation of the spine. Then, you’ll discuss your treatment plan.

Adjustment

The misalignment of spinal structures is referred to as a subluxation. Adjustments can be done with a few different techniques, but they all work to correct the subluxation.

Some adjustments are done manually, or by hand. The chiropractor will ask you to lie on the table, and then he or she will apply precise force with the hands to adjust the spine. If the problem is in your lower back, you’ll probably be asked to lie on your side.

Sometimes, chiropractors use the drop piece on the table. This will abruptly lower the elevation on part of the table. At the same time, the chiropractor applies a quick thrust. Table adjustments tend to be gentler.
