What to Pack for Your Camping Trip

Even a short camping trip requires an impressive list of equipment. Exactly what you’ll take depends on where you’re going. Many campgrounds offer grills or fire rings, access to potable water, and sanitation facilities, while other destinations just offer the land and the views. In general, however, you can expect to need the following gear:

Camp Necessities

You’ll need a tent, of course, and you should double-check that you’ve got all the stakes. You’ll also need a mallet to secure the stakes. Bring sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and compact travel pillows. You might want a couple of folding chairs, too.

Clothing

Bring clothing that’s well-suited to the outdoors. This includes hiking boots, wool socks, a waterproof jacket, hat, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts. Bring sunglasses, and pack a swimsuit and water shoes, if appropriate.

Personal Items

You’ll need a toiletry kit with the essentials, including soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and a hairbrush. Bring any prescription medications you need. If you have allergies, bring your epinephrine autoinjector. It’s always a good idea to have a first aid kit with you when you’re camping. You should also pack sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, bug spray, itch relief cream, and hand sanitizer. And don’t forget the toilet paper!

Food and Water

If you aren’t a camping expert, spend some time at an outdoors shop to talk to the salespeople about what you’ll need. They can point you in the right direction regarding bear-proof coolers, camp stoves, cookware, utensils, and water filtration devices. You’ll also likely need a small cutting board and knives. If you don’t plan to do much cooking, bring some freeze-dried camping meals. Even if you plan to source your water onsite, it’s always a smart idea to pack some gallon jugs of potable water in your car—just in case.
